What a Streak Actually Trains
A streak looks like it rewards learning. Look closer at the mechanics and you find it rewards exactly one behaviour: returning. Open the app, touch the task, keep the number alive. Whether anything was understood is invisible to the counter. That is why badges and streaks deserve a parent's suspicion — most of them measure attendance and call it achievement.
The deeper trick is where the motivation sits. A streak does not make the app more rewarding to use; it makes the app more costly to leave. Those feel similar from the outside. From the inside, one is appetite and the other is anxiety.
Streaks Punish Exactly the Wrong Things
Think about what actually breaks a streak. A fever. A family holiday. A grandmother's birthday dinner that ran long. Exam week, when the child was — of all things — studying. The streak treats each of these as a failure and burns the record to zero.
A child who loses three months of “progress” to one sick day learns something true about the product: it never cared about the learning, it cared about the visits. And the child who dutifully protects a streak at 9pm, tapping through an exercise with their mind elsewhere, is not building knowledge. They are paying protection money to a counter. We decided our product would simply never own that counter.
What Our Badges Mark Instead
Every badge in OpenKids marks a mastery event — a moment when something in the child's head actually changed. The first fully completed proof. A misconception caught, named, and fixed. A skill still standing at re-test, weeks later. An idea explained back in the child's own words. These are the moments a good teacher would write home about, so they are the only moments we decorate.
Two properties follow from that choice. No badge can be earned by hours on screen or days in a row, because time is not a mastery event. And no badge can ever be taken away, because a thing you have understood does not un-happen when you go on holiday.
What “Engagement” Does to a Product When Nobody Questions It
Here is the uncomfortable mechanism. When a team's north-star metric is engagement — minutes, sessions, retention — every design meeting bends toward it, usually without a single villain in the room. Should sessions end cleanly? Not if it hurts minutes. Should notifications be calmer? Not if it hurts return rate. The metric decides, one reasonable-sounding trade-off at a time, until the product is optimised for the counter and merely tolerable for the child.
We hold ourselves to a different number: can the child do the next problem of this kind without us? By that measure, a child who finishes in twenty minutes and leaves is a triumph, not a churn risk. A learning product should be proud, not nervous, when the laptop closes — and its badge case should prove it.
